Gov. Pawlenty and Key Lawmakers Announce GAMC Compromise.

Movie: http://UpTake-Editorial.groups.theuptake.org/rss/videogalleryView/id/2831/
Description:
Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty, and key lawmakers announce a late Friday compromise on General Assistance Medical Care, or GAMC.

Much has happened in the last few weeks, before this compromise. GAMC, was "un-allotted" by Pawlenty, then reinforced by the legislature, then vetoed, then an override failed this last Monday. Also, 3 recipients had just filed suit, and the "un-enrollment" from GAMC would have begun this weekend.

So, compromise was reached, and at this press conference we will hear from : Governor Pawlenty; Senator Linda Berglin (DFL); Representative Erin Murphy (DFL); Representative Matt Dean ; House Speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher (DFL); Representative Thomas Huntley (DFL); Representative Kurt Zellers (R); Senator David Senjem (R); and Dept. of Humans Services Commissioner Cal Ludeman on some of the details of the compromise.

MN Governor Sued For Cutting Health Care

Movie: http://UpTake-Editorial.groups.theuptake.org/rss/videogalleryView/id/2830/
Description:

Three poor people in Minnesota have filed a class action lawsuit against Governor Tim Pawlenty for cutting General Assistance Medical Care (GAMC). The lawsuit says the Governor acted unconstitutionally by creating a budget crisis so he could use his "unallotment" powers.

The suit, filed in Ramsey County District Court, is very similar to one that will be heard before the Minnesota Supreme Court on March 15th. The lower court found that Governor Pawlenty had indeed violated the constitution when he unalloted money for a nutrition program.Attorney David Lillihaug will be one of the attorneys arguing that case before the Minnesota Supreme Court.

In an interview on "Quick On The UpTake" Lillehaug said it is likely the new case will be heard tomorrow (Friday) because state computers start enrolling GAMC beneficiaries in the more expensive MNCare program on Saturday.

Religious Leaders Urge Pawlenty GAMC Veto Override.

Movie: http://UpTake-Editorial.groups.theuptake.org/rss/videogalleryView/id/2827/
Description:
By Craig Stellmacher

Before the vote on Monday, Father Kevin McDonough and Pastor Grant Stevenson strongly urge a veto override for General Assistance Medical Care, or GAMC.

Father McDonough, starts by mentioning that a second Bishop's letter was delivered over the weekend to the legislature, signed by all Minnesota Bishops urging them to support GAMC. He then goes on to mention, how he knows personally someone who needs the help of GAMC right now, as a bridge to a future more stable life.

"I have no idea what we would do in my neighborhood..." without GAMC. Pastor Stevenson, also mentions he personally knows people on GAMC. Then he powerfully attacks Governor Pawlenty for repeatedly invoking God--as "being in charge". He reminds Pawlenty, and the legislature, that THEY are responsible "for the poorest in the land", that they have a "social contract with one another".

Republicans Block Health Care For Poor In Minnesota - Full debate video

Movie: http://UpTake-Editorial.groups.theuptake.org/rss/videogalleryView/id/2824/
Description:
Last month Republicans in the Minnesota House overwhelmingly supported a bill to fund General Assistance Medical Care (GAMC) a program that provides health care to the poorest of Minnesota's poor. All of the Republicans who voted for GAMC last month voted against it today. The had been no changes in the bill. It would cost less than what will happen without its passage and it covers more people. So why didn't Republicans vote for the bill this time? Because Governor Tim Pawlenty (also a Republican) had vetoed it. This is a video of the entire debate.

Below is a playlist of other debate highlights.

A Last Minute Plea To Save Health Care For Poor

Movie: http://UpTake-Editorial.groups.theuptake.org/rss/videogalleryView/id/2823/
Description:
By Craig Stellmacher

Minutes before the vote, inside the House Chamber just a few feet away, a last appeal from recipients and members of a coalition to Override Governor Pawlenty's veto of the GAMC bill. Over 30,000 are off GMAC as of March 1st, for 3 here at the press conference, it's very personal, but for Bishop Kevin McDonough it's about humans who need a start, and for Pastor Grant Stephenson a "social contract", and it's about ethics.

The veto override failed on a strictly party line vote. Below is a playlist with highlights from the debate.
